Born in Mexico and came to the U.S. at age 5, knowing no English.

Attended an all Spanish speaking school from 1st until 4th grade when the school closed due to budgetary problems.

Transferred to an all English speaking school in 5th grade.

Taught himself English out of necessity.

"I feel that I am a good reader. I thought I was a good writer, but after taking AP English last year (junior year) and getting my worst grades in high school (Cs) I don't think I'm a good writer after that."
